Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for January 02, 2011
Transcript:
Alice: I'm so bored! I don't like the New Year. I had more fun last year. Petey: Too bad! You can't go back in time. Alice: Why can't I go back in time? Petey: Because, if you could, you'd keep going back in time just to smack yourself for doing something stupid. You'd think, "Why did I say that dumb thing in class?" "Why did I watch that TV show?" "Why did I make that silly face just when all those adults looked at me?" And you'd go back in time and smack yourself for being an idiot. You'd chase yourself through time forever, smacking yourself silly over every misstep, instead of learning to accept disappointment and regret in a more normal, positive way. Alice: Ha! I'll bet I can go back in time! Petey: Now we'll see if future Alice shows up and smacks you for saying something stupid. Alice: Hey! I'll get to see what the back of my head really looks like! Petey: Uh-oh! Now she'll smack you twice.

Never look at that cowlick, Alice.

You can’t tamper with the timeline, Alice, even if you could go back. You really don’t know what the repercussions will be.

Wait, wasn’t this basically a Star Trek episode?

Having to think back can be disappointing enough without having to go back! Forget it Alice. Listen to Petey.

Petey has wisdom.

It was a Twlight Zone episode.

This is a common theme of both science fiction and philosophy. Back to the Future, anyone? What would happen if we could go back in time? Or would it really change that much? The world may never know.

Amen to that Doctor Toon.

If I could return my grades would be better…………

The second panel is a copy-and-paste of the first one. Lazy.
Munodi almost 14 years ago
If could go back in time, I’d see that if I had done things differently my life would be worse, probaly two divorces, a hostile and mentally ill daughter, and a mind destroying job. I’d probably be reduced to reading “Peanuts” and thinking Charles Schultz was clever.
dante.deangelo almost 14 years ago
check your glasses perscription, Muziton. That is NOT cut and paste.
the table proportions are different, as is Alice’s hair, the papers on the table and the stripes on Alice’s shirt.

Don’t knock Peanuts, Munodi. It had a very strong following for 50 years until Schultz finally retired. I still read The Classic Peanuts on Comics.com

The past is always slapping me in the face.

No Peanuts, no Calvin and Hobbes. No Peanuts, no Cul-de-Sac.
“No Peanuts.” That’s like being a rock-n-roll fan and saying “Who needs Chuck Berry or Buddy Holly?”

Muzition is partly right. I didn’t like the drawing of Petey in the first panel and, with deadline coming up (or past), photoshopped a new head onto him from the second panel. A little bit lazy.
tgaml almost 14 years ago
Richard don’t go back in time and change anything, that second panel is perfect.

If we learned anything from Lost, we learned: What happened, happened.

no need at for me to go back in time to smack myself for doing something stupid – it’s an ongoing thing.

It’s a line straight out of Harry Potter. Hermione said it about the back of her own head.

R.T., you’re allowed to take a shortcut every once in a while. The pleasure you give to us outweighs any so called ‘laziness’.
Trisha_Evenstar almost 14 years ago
@ MARGUERITEM I couldn’t agree more :) @ Munodi I’m fairly certain Charles Shultz would be clever enough to not diss one of the best comic strips in history, be it his own or not.

I actually HAVE gone back in time and changed things. Of course I don’t expect any acknowledgement, let alone THANKS, but trust me, it was for the best. As messed-up as things are in the present, the future used to be MUCH worse than it will be now.
cutiepie29 almost 14 years ago
Thank you, Fritzoid! I suspected it was you and I really appreciate it, since now I don’t have to do it myself.

I stole the concept for the above from some other recent comic strip.
If I could remember which, I’d give credit.
Apologies to who[m]ever.
Tommy1733 almost 14 years ago
Possibly Star Trek or Twilight Zone, but I am thinking more like “Our Town”. Deep stuff.

I think that’s the most talkative I’ve ever heard Petey.
