Alice: Ha ha! A comic book about me at theater camp! It's so great! Somebody should be drawing me all the time! No, wait! I'd hate it if someone drew everything I did! I mean, EEURGH! You're not drawing me right now, are you? Petey: Of course not. Alice: Good. That's be creepy.

Yes, it’s call reality television.

On the positive news side, schools are going back to teaching it because some of the standardized tests have decided it’s a skill that needs to be mastered and are testing for it.

On the flip side of this, I used to teach German and have had to read old German handwriting from 100-200 years ago. Most of the German kids, even 30 years ago, couldn’t read it. Eventually, generations develop different forms of writing and leave decoding it to the experts.

I’m surprised that there’s no app for reading cursive! All you’d have to do is scan the text with you favorite phone, and the phone reads it back to you, using some sort of artificial voice! That should not be difficult.

“Most schools have stopped teaching it now, which means this generation won’t be able to read it when they grow up.”
Pointless alarmism. Reading cursive is a skill that can be picked up in two minutes. Writing in cursive is a different matter, and requires practice. I could read cursive about two years earlier than I learned to write it, almost as soon as I learned to read anything other than block capitals.
As cdward suggests, it’s simply a matter of making the associations. Can you read High Gothic script, or medieval calligraphy? If you try for longer than two minutes, you can probably do it. Does that mean you’d be able to write in either? Probably not.
Of course, an <individual’s handwriting may still be indecipherable if it’s unfamiliar, but that’s a separate matter.

“No, I’m not drawing you right now! On an unrelated note, don’t talk so fast…" . Interesting that Petey would draw that perspective, including himself in the picture, instead of drawing what he can see, which would be much easier!
