Alice: Petey! Look what I got! Mom said it's too early to get all the Christmas decorations out, but I got to have just one! See? It's a Santa bear! Don't you wish you had a Christmas decoration? Petey: I've already got one, on the ceiling. Alice: Hey! How'd you get tinsel? Petey: I found it under the sofa last year. I taped it to the ceiling yesterday. I call it "the Tinsel of Damocles." It's a scathing commentary on tacky holiday ornaments. Alice: I want some tinsel on my ceiling. Petey: And it's the most festive thing in my room!

That’s much better than my sister’s suggestion of a “Christmas Chair” when we were kids. Never one for decorating, she just wanted to dump everything on a chair.
Petey’s my hero.

Theoretically, the sword represents the fear that the one under it feels due to success, fame and fortune. The tinsel must symbolize the fear that during the Christmas dinner the peas and the carrots are touching on the plate.

Alice, do not be misled by Petey! Tinsel should not be taped to the ceiling! Use superglue.

Why does everything have to be a scathing commentary with him?

Before I read Petey’s explanation I thought the tinsel was growing through the ceiling from the attic, like plant roots in search of nourishment.
