My maternal grandmother lived to be 90 back in 2008 (was three months shy of her 91st birthday). My paternal grandmother lived to be 63 back in 1971 (one month after her 62nd birthday; 13 years before my birth). My stepmother’s mother is still alive and is (I think) 90.

Once again, a little under 10 years ago, Richard posted a blog entry regarding this strip:

The center panel was also previewed in an earlier blog entry:

Alice Grandma’s house reminds me of a lot of subdivisions here on the Florida SunCoast. The suburbs were developed in the ‘50s, 60’s and ‘70 with one story ranch houses of CBS construction, nothing extravagant but comfortable living for retirees and families alike. I grew up in one of those houses. Then something started to happen in the late ’80s, ’90s and the 2000’s. The real estate prices rose exponentially and a lot of the land in desirable locations (strategic areas that were nice but convenient, waterfront or on canals) was built out and when these houses went up for sale when people either moved or passed on, the houses were sold, demolished and in place of them gigantic multi storey houses with a lot of square footage were built, feeding the building and realty boom. This continued until the housing bubble burst in 2008 and then started again a bit in the past 4 or 5 years before the virus hit. Sigh….. I liked the suburbs better in 1978!

Alice, if you’re getting the grandmothers together, you could have at least warned her about the deviled eggs.

Playdates. One aspect of modern childhood I’ll never get used to.

I missed out on most of the grandparent experience (from a child’s perspective) for reasons unnecessary to go into here. But it seems to be a memorable part of most childhoods.

My Dad who just turned 86 and my Mother, who passed away in February at 83, have a great great granddaughter . To put things into perspective, my great great grandfather fought in the Civil War.
