I googled it, articles from 2010 and 2012 claimed we do. Seems we don’t care about it more recently.

I’m at the point I dislike being reliant on so many THINGS. Especially THINGS that are so esoteric there are maybe a dozen people in the world who REALLY understand how they work and could make one all on their own.

I mean, in the old days, maybe you didn’t have the skill to repair a broken wagon wheel, but if you took it down to the wheelwright, you could see and understand what he was doing to fix it.

Even the internal combustion engine, most people have the basic concept of how it works, and with a bit of effort and a couple of tools, they can become backyard mechanics and rebuild an old Chevy 350. (Automatic transmissions are different. It’s magic leprechauns living in the casing as far as I can tell.)

Now a “basic” desktop computer, sure, even I can buy the components and put one together. But what about a failed hard drive? (Lookin’ at YOU, Seagate.) I’ve got a couple around the place from days before I was meticulous about keeping ALL my data copied between a couple or three, hoping to find somebody who might be able to retrieve some irreplaceable photos and such. Anybody here know how to recover data from a failed hard drive? Raise your hand if you do, I can give you a temporary job.

Even going back to radio or television, maybe your average homeowner couldn’t easily fix one, but most people understood the basic concept of turning sound into a little wave of electricity that went through the air (or should I say “On” the air?).

a lot easier to put away than my 30 volume Enclopædia Brittanica tho

on google (bing, go duck…) no, on the internet yes. there are so many people / companies who leave themselves open to hacking and other forms of breaches its insane.The company I use to work for use a form or security that involved hardware and human interaction. Now its software protected and encrypted, guess what. they got hacked.
