" . . .But, all comic strip characters seem to have their regular uniforms. Sam has reverted back to the green suit and derby (where are the plaid sports coats and trilby hats he wore during Gould’s last days?). It becomes easier to identify the characters if they are consistent. In a long shot, you always know the guy in the yellow coat is Tracy " -—————————————————————————
And quietly, largely UNNOTICED a strong recognition part of the Sam Catchem character has disappeared. It first became more pointed in the strip of July 14th, when Sam was seen twiddling a pencil between his fingers rather than his usual high recognition, smoke wafting cigarette, in a way, not unlike that Tracy Yellow Coat.
A closer check suggests Sam last smoking art presentation was on May 31st, Early June had 3 or so panels with unlit ‘cigs’ in the mouth but - no swirling smoke !Our green suited, sandwich eating character seems without fanfare - to have “kicked the habit” this past month and a half ?
It was noticeable in 1978 right after Gould’s retirement, that his smoking seemed censored. Max Collins ?It’s been that way even through the Kilian /Locher years until the new team arrived
..To my eye, it seems a distinctive part of the Sam Catchem character !
