So, there is an accomplice dropping off The Hangman and his noose, although the gun pointed at the pilot doesn’t necessarily make him a very willing accomplice. On the other hand, the pilot is sort of smiling. Maybe The Hangman is intending to use the noose and the gun to do what he wants to do, one in each hand.
Interesting that The Hangman is not aware of Tracy on the set. Everyone there seemed to know. It is possible that The Hangman is not involved in the movie.
I think the gun apparently pointed at the ’copter pilot is misleading. The pilot is masked, much like The Hangman, and his expression, insofar as visible, seems like that of an accomplice rather than that of a hostage. Does the The Hangman plan to lasso “Byrd” and hang him from the helicopter, or does he plan to de-plane and string up “Byrd” by/from the Blisterfield billboard? Either way, unless Forsythe is also an accomplice, The Hangman will find a surprise awaiting him. He might even end up hoist by his own noose….
The better part of Three weeks to psyche us out by going deep into production to establish the premise.
I suppose one of the “Midnight Mirror” actors might prove significant, but for the most part they seem to have been swept under the rug – or, in several cases, suspended above it.
Then there’s that “Nash” gaffe – If it actually was a gaffe – And “Adam Austin’s” agent having two names.
Cameos by Vera Alldid and Vitamin Flintheart (… with Coffee Grounds) to clarify the setup.
Several days worth of strips to insert a Mr. Magoo episode into continuity.
More setup clarification, courtesy of Junior and ”Hungry, Hungry Honeymoon" …
Oh, and a bit I’d missed – The actor portraying “Flattop” was referred to as “Steve” here …
Additional plot clarification, this time courtesy of Wendy Wichel" …
Next …
Tracy gets “The Byrd” …
… plus, an extended cameo appearance by George Tawara.
It’s victim time …
… or possibly suspect time.
Introducing Byron Orlock!
Coincidentally, portrayed wielding guns, much akin to today’s iteration of *”The Hangman” …
Orlock’s backstory ate up the better part of a week: I’d be surprised if his inclusion didn’t carry additional weight beyond being just another random victim.
Then, in rapid succession …
Mayor Armstrong orders Tracy to report to wardrobe …
… as the cast continues to be culled.
Finally …
… enter ”The Hangman”
Gotta admit, I’m sort of with Sydney in that I would’ve like to have seen more legwork on this case, but – reading it over again in a chunk – it plays out better than I’d thought, though it feels like we skipped over the middle of the mystery a little bit.
Still think “The Hangman” is being portrayed by Orlock.
Dead or not.
Unless what we’ve been watching is a play within a play within a play.
Which isn’t to say that others aren’t involved in some capacity.
The Hangman holds his gun in his left hand. The wristwatch on Byrd’s right wrist (conspicuous in two panels of the strip above in which Tracy first met him) indicates Byrd is a southpaw. Circumstantial evidence so far, but I think it’ll prove significant!

Anyone want to bet that Byrd is the copter pilot?

And just to add to the fun…..what if Forsythe is in on the gig? It looks like The Hangman knows those two have those rigs under their coats.

If I was the pilot, I wouldn’t want The Hangman sitting by my side. I do not like how he handle his gun. Very detrimental to my well being :)

I am very uncomfortable with the idea of a gun being pointed at me and to say that it is your partner who is doing it

Have we seen an ear like that before? What if the accomplice just skedaddles?

Abner Kadaver’s old mask being cleaned or something?

The third panel is ambiguous, the more I stare at it the less certain I am about the pilot’s situation/allegiance.

We don’t exactly have a very large pool of on-camera suspects to draw upon.
And many of the remaining ones …
Lloyd Newman …
“Adam Austin” …
Forsythe …
… have been established as being on-set.
That pretty much leaves Morgan Byrd and – dead or not – Byron Orlock.
Am I missing anyone?

Why is the pilot/partner’s mask so weird?

Structurally, this story has been an odd one.

How do you hire someone to help with this sort of thing? Do you take out a want ad? Do helicopter rentals come with a “no questions asked” policy?
