My wife and I went to a place like Ruth Chris for our anniversary. I didn’t mind paying $60.00 for a nice steak, but $15.00 for mashed potatoes? I can open up a packet of mashed potatoes at home, thank you very much.
I always heard their ads on the radio, When I visited my sister in PA, there was one there. We went to the restaurant with my wife, sister and three kids, one of which was a toddler, and I looked around and thought, this is going to cost a bundle. Plus it seemed really fancy. My son spilled a soda before we even ordered. I told the waiter “I’m sorry, I can’t do this to all these good people” nodding at by toddler. I said “Let me pay for the drinks and we’ll go.” He said don’t worry about it. I don’t know which of us was more relieved as we walked out.
Another story- A casino opened up near us. They have a restaurant that sells a “Cowboy” steak that s supposed to be huge. A friend of mine went, and ordered it. He said, not only wasn’t it that big, it wasn’t good, and the potato on the side was $11! A while later he was in a bar in town, and was talking to a guy and told him about it. The guy ended up being the CEO of the whole casino chain! He gave the guy free meal coupons worth $400 and comped him a bunch of play. He said he would address the issues, and would check back with him. Now they meet up every time the guy comes to town. One time my friend took him to a really good Italian restaurant in town. he said to me “Can you believe I’m buying a millionaire dinner?”
The name Ruth’s Chris came about because a woman named Ruth had bought a steak restaurant named Chris’s, which was very successful. She wanted to open more of them but ‘Chris’ would not let her use his name on the chain, just on the first restaurant which she bought from him. So she called the rest of them “Ruth’s Chris”.
The $35 charge for a steak might be believable, depending on the quality of the steak. However, $35 per side and for dessert is outrageous. That restaurant would not be able to attract me to eat there!
You do have Ruth Chris’s at home, and Bonanza has been gone from Chicago for a long time. yes, I realize this strip is all reruns. Also, Jerry breaking the fourth wall again.
This was my dad. He loved steak and would happily go to a Sizzler. I’m not a steak fan, but I will eat a small one at a high end steak house (Houston’s is the place near me). I don’t think he could tell the difference, even though I treated him often.
My dad stopped at a place like this. After looking at the menu he decided we would go someplace else. Mother liked the atmosphere, but dad says "Hell, I can’t eat atmosphere

Those are old prices. The average price is around $60 per entree. I took my parents there a few years ago for an 85th bday celebration. It was nice.

Cincinnati has Belterra Park, so the local buffet has the benefit of a steady supply of “steak.”

What ate they doing in Cincinnati? By 2010 the Ponderosa and Bonanza chain were long gone.

Just wondering why Joy would pick a place like that for her birthday dinner. Maybe she thinks that the others would pay for her meal.
