Well, sir. That becomes a metaphysical problem. The steps do indeed lead upward. But judging by your fine physique, there’s a better than even chance climbing them will kill you. And whether that will ultimately take you up or down has been the subject of theological, para psychological and epistemological study for centuries. All in all, I’d take the elevator. But one at a time. There’s a weight limit.

I see a logic in Burl’s question. Remember the movie “Up the Down Staircase”?

Just to mess with their tiny brains even more I would have responded with, “Well, they go down to the 10th floor then up to the 2nd floor, but you can’t get to the 5th floor from it, you’ll need to use Staircase #8 to get up to the 5th floor. Floors 7-8 are accessible by this staircase, but you’ll need to get there from the 10th floor – the first one I told you about. Okay?”

Tell him, “They go sideways”. He’d probably believe it, anyway.
