Rick: So what do you hear at work, Babe? Is justice going after Gingrich? Joanie: Probably not, but I think we could...and not just on the perjury. One of Newt's foundations transferred his course material, which it owned, back to Newt for a book. The book later netted him $471,000. Rick: Hold it. You mean Newt personally profited from a book scam? Just like Jim Wright? Joanie: Just like Jim Wright. Rick: Who says the gods don't have a sense of humor? Joanie: Well, they do, but usually they can't agree.
“In the late 1980s, Gingrich launched a vicious attack on Democratic Speaker Jim Wright, arguing that bulk sales of his book had been crafted to avoid laws limiting outside income for members of Congress. By the mid-90s, however, Gingrich found himself in a strikingly similar position, as it came to light that he had received a $4.5 million advance from Harper Collins in a two-book deal. Then, in the spirit of one doing one better, it later came out that one of Gingrich’s charities had bought the books en masse.”
