    There was a story that just after the war, Eisenhower was speaking to a crowd in Japan with a translator. In the middle of his speech, he told a joke, which took a little while to tell. The translator said just a few words and the crowd laughed.

    After the speech, he asked the translator how he had told the joke so quickly. The translator responded “The General has told a joke. Please laugh.”
