Roland: Boy, I"m amazed these pants made it back. Look at all these rips. They sure bring back memories! Yes, these pants tell quite a story. For instance, this tough, greasy stain from Lebanon. Know how I got it? I was interviewing a beautiful P.S.O. guerrilla at a cafe in Beirut when we heard gunfire. I asked her where we could go for safety... Joanie: Listen, would it be okay if I didn't hear about your stain from Lebanon? Roland: Suddenly she took a bullet and fell into my spaghetti.

You know she’d rather take a bullet, than do the “Lady and the Tramp” thing with the spaghetti!

today’s doonesbury reminds me of joss whedon’s home-made 2008 cult classic “dr horrible’s singalong blog”, whose opening musical number was LaundryDay. won an emmy before getting on the tube. check it out (literally) from most public libraries.

Kaffe, What makes you think Roland didn’t move her head and finish off the spaghetti? His well known sense of decency?

First-time commenter. I’m pretty sure my first exposure to Doonesbury was ‘Talkin’ ‘Bout My G-G-Generation’ but it might have been ‘Welcome to Club Scud’ or ‘Dare To Be Great, Ms. Caucus’. I was roughly 5-6 years old and didn’t understand a thing I was reading, but I had an intuitive sense of both absurdity and irony – or at least the ability to know something was intended to be funny even if I didn’t actually ‘get’ it – which, at that age, was enough. I was also drawn by how ‘real’ it was compared to the other comics I had been exposed to at that age. Long story short, I have followed Doonesbury loosely throughout my life (I am now 30), so I was delighted to discover that GoComics has the entire archive (or close to it) available for free online. It’s taken me about two weeks, but I just finished reading through the entire archive here. I hope this archive is available for many years to come. I anticipate that Mr. Trudeau will retire, as he richly deserves to after so many years, but I will miss Doonesbury immensely when it finally comes to a full stop, and archives like this will be of immense value. Thank you, Mr. Trudeau, for all your years of creativity, and thanks to GoComics for hosting the archive.

Beirut used to be compared to the great cities of Europe, Paris, Rome, Madrid: romantic sidewalk cafes, great restaurants (yes, serving Italian), five-star hotels. It was struggling to regain its reputation when it became another battleground for Israel and Hezbollah. Anthony Bordain was filming an episode in Beirut for his “No Reservations” show when he and his crew were forced to evacuate.
