Served in ‘Nam with some guys from the tiger division. If Trump ran into these guys from the SOUTH, he’d realy freak if thinking the northerners are more dangerous.
I will confess geography was never my strong suit. I have a globe made in the year I was born. It sits next to me at my computer, and I look at it and refer to it from time to time. The type is so small that I now need a magnifying glass to read it. And still I’ m bad at geography. I doubt I could pick out Korea on an unmarked map of the world. The USA would be a piece of cake.
Sad the schooling going on these days. Many countries have changed since I was a kid, and new countries have sprung up, but the world is the same. Just mud and water
Read an article about a teacher who was teaching adults to read. She was planing a trip and pulled out a map during a break (before GPS). Her class was fascinated by the map, they couldn’t conceive of using one or that they existed. Map reading became part of the course.
Knowing where a country is strikes me as irrelevant. Buy a ticket, get on the plane, and presto, you’re there. Take some selfies, get back on the plane, and bam! you’re home again. Not as hard as it used to be when you had to climb in a covered wagon and beat some mules.
The real problems arose when Europeans after WW I, and again in Africa in the post-empire period after WW II, drew all the “National” boundary lines on the maps and land, with absolutely no consideration of ethnic, racial, tribal, or religious lines of the occupants, OR the geography as in land forms, water sources, and natural resources present or absent. War became popular internally as well as externally with the results. As with Trump and the current administration, ignorance was, and is again, bliss.
Korea? It’s the peninsula jutting out of China, just west of Japan. There are two Koreas, one capitalist, one communist, one nice and one mean, one fat and one lean. One of them has Samsung, the other has Kim-Jong-Un. One has a lot of food, the other has none. One is a winner, the other’s a bum. One has a future, the other is done.
