There is one thing that definitely proves cats are smarter than dogs: you will never see a group of cats lashed together pulling a sled through the snow.
Who begs for treats and who has the human trying desperately different brands to tempt a finicky eater? Who begs to be let out to do its business and who has humans carrying litter bags in and cleaning up litter box after doing one’s business? Who is ordered off the sofa and who seats on the lap after being begged to prettily by the human? Who gets a whack on the nose for playbiting and who gets a belly rub and then bites and scratch the heck out of the hand?Cats rule.
My cats only scratch furniture when the humans are around. It is clearly acting out in order to get attention. Sadly, it works and I can’t think of a way for it not to (since I don’t want them clawing my furniture!)
At least we discovered that micro-fiber fabric doesn’t seem to take damage when they claw it. I think the threads are too closely woven for claws to get a grip on individual threads. So that’s what all our new furniture is upholstered with these days.

Cats use the furniture for their scratching pleasure because they choose to. No matter how much catnip you sprinkle on the scratching post.
