Clerk: Paper or plastic?
Eno: Um.... paper.
Clerk: Great. We can all kiss another tree goodbye.
Eno: Okay. Plastic then.
Clerk: Fine. Go ahead and clog up our landfills.
Eno: I thought this was a one-guilt-trip-or-less aisle.
Paper takes up seven times as much room as plastic. Which means seven times as many truck loads to transport, seven times as much fuel & pollution, seven times as much room in the landfill. IF they decompose in the landfill, which is doubtful, they release dyes, chemicals, ink and glue into the ground.
Now which is better?

Hey, at least paper is biodegradable and renewable, and to some extent, recyclable.

Dead trees or dead dinosaurs?

Science fact: Trees grow back.
History fact: It was the greenies who have always fought trash-to-steam technology which would get double use out of both paper and plastic.
Simple fact: Just because some resource is going to run out in a few centuries is no reason not to use it now.
Me fact: I double bag, and if the earth doesn’t like it, tough.

I use reusable bags and keep them in my car so I have them ready each time I go to the store.

Hey, if it wasn’t for the miracle of paper and plastic we’d still be running naked through dense dark forests being chased by dinosaurs.

If all I was buying was a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter (or whatever that is), I wouldn’t take a bag at all…

Eno should get a plastic bag for his groceries and a paper bag for the cashier’s head.

Right. And reuse the plastic. Our Safeway gives a nickel back for every reused bag.
