I worked in a clothing factory in the late 1970’s (when we still did that in the US), sewing one seam in multiple garments for the entire day. They’d pay sub-minimum wage, because you were “training”, but after a while, they’d move you to a different task (sewing a different seam), and now you’re again “training”, so sub-minimum. Then you might get laid off for a few weeks, and when you come back, you’re “training” again. I once made 800 pairs of shorts in one day, and was told I was too slow. Yes, there was a union, but it was toothless.
