April: This is so totally unfair, Beck. I hafta spend every day at my mom's store. No negotiations, man - it's like - be there. I am so not happy. It's like I'm gonna burn down the house - or worse. Have some guys over! Some democracy this is! Where's the charter of rights an' freedoms? This is my life! Don't I have a say in what happens to me? Doesn't my opinion count?!!! Elly: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9...

To me Ellys mentality is so weird as me and my brother were alone after school until parents came home. About from 8 year old to when I moved out at 19. And that is normal here so that feels so weird and somehow yicky

I just don’t understand Elly’s motive. When I was around April’s age, I was left home alone or in an after-school program. There was like one time I missed my stop, but that was because I was reading Harry Potter to avoid being bullied. If you can trust her to be in a relationship and she’s 11-12, then you can trust her alone in the house without inviting a boy over.

If I’d argued with my mother like this, I would have been strapped within an inch of my life! We were NOT allowed to answer back or disagree in any way. I’m not saying my parents were right, just that they were the final authority in our home. This was back in the 60’s and early 70’s.
