Connie might be an adult who is free to make her own choices and mistakes, but she acts like a teenager in the throes of her first crush. She also has a son whose interests she appears to put second after her quest for a partner, and somewhere along the line she supposedly has a job as a radiologist, a job with very flexible hours to let her spend all that time drinking coffee with Elly! :)
@Susan001 - Since it’s winter break, Lawrence would hardly be missing school. And @AdamsFamily1MW - Since Connie is a radiologist, perhaps she works the second shift at the hospital. That would leave her free during the earlier part of the day. Or she could work three 12 hour shifts a week.
Lawrence spends alot of time between houses - Connie is lucky Elly is not working and they can trade times. Three 12 hour shifts works for me, Catlady 1 - had not thought of that.
I don’t think Phil is leading Connie on, he’s being upfront and honest with her. She just refuses to listen and keeps hoping for something more. She’ll end up getting hurt but it’s her own fault.
dkram, I was in court and a guy on the witness stand said his name was Richard Head. I got the giggles and nearly had to leave the courtroom. I’ll leave it there too…..
I think Elly’s afraid of getting caught in the middle of all that since it’s her friend and lives next door…..I would see it as my business under those circumstances.
Yes, Connie is a big girl but if my best friend/next door neighbor had a SERIOUS crush on my “player” brother and I felt like he was using/leading her on, I’d make it my business too.
Connie can’t see sense because she thinks she’s “in love” and believes that with a little bit of time, he’ll come around and develop the same feelings for her.
Since (according to Phil) he sees them as “just friends”, it’s up to him to put a stop to things before they go too far and if he’s too dumb to see that for himself, then, yes, Elly needs to point out the obvious to him.
Unfortunately for Connie … Phil’s obviously enjoying all the attention she gives him whenever he’s around and either doesn’t see that he’s really encouraging her more than discouraging her or he knows that he is but doesn’t care and therefore, doesn’t want to put a stop to it.
I missed this strip for years, and have been confused as to the characters. I just went to their website, and think I have caught on that these grown ups are the same grown ups of 10-15 years ago, and that the strip is in some sort of do-over. Unless the young daughter of the past strips grows up to marry another dentist. I remembered Lawrence coming out as gay, and thought this young Lawrence was some kid named after him. Have I figured it out????? Answer tomorrow if you can. Thanks.
I used to work at a company that made us all wear badges with our first initial and last name. We had one man out in the plant whose last name was pronounced “coon thair”, but was spelled with a u istead of the oo. He didn’t last long with that particular name on a badge for everyone to see.
Yes, Connie is an adult and can make her own decisions, but a family member or a good friend can give someone (i.e. Phil) a hard time. That’s just part of life. We would all be lonely and selfish if no one got involved in our lives.
@momix76 and @GretchensMom, I agree with you. If a person wants to be “just friends”, they have a certain responsibility to make sure that’s how it is. Otherwise they’re taking advantage of the other person, and should break off the relationship.
These people with those awful names, their parents really ought to have thought twice before naming them Richard. But there’s no law against changing your name and I wonder why more people don’t do it rather than go through life being made fun of.

Connie has a plan to turn the Phil Ride into a permanent exhibit. Women always have a plan to land that trout.

Doesn’t sound like Phil is thinking of Connie’s son either. I totally agree with Elly–Phil is ‘pushing it’ and it shouldn’t be pushed.

Sadly, responsibility isn’t in fashion nowadays…
