As to why she’s doing it, does any of us ever know why? I just survived my son’s party, and I enjoyed it while it was going on, but I was glad when it was over! Next time, I’ll be having it somewhere other than my house…the mess after definately was not worth it.
For my nephew’s 7th birthday, my sister hired a guy who had a reptile museum- he brought a rattler, a cobra, a boa and anaconda. The kids, and I, loved sitting just feet from the snakes as he’d get them out to show us, and all lining up to hold an 8 foot long boa. But then this small, very fast lizard leaped out of it’s box & some of the dads went running in the opposite direction- kind of like the cartoon image of elephants stampeding at the sight of a mouse!
I can understand if she’s worried about the amount of children she’s invited over, but the way this comic is structured it sounds like she’s mainly freaking out over having to provide a basic cake, celery w/cheese and simple sandwiches for the children & acting as though this is incredibly excessive. If she was planning an large amount of complicated food or crazy activities that would be one thing, but these foods are all easily assembled and she makes no mention of activities. Is providing simple snacks for her daughter’s birthday really that much of a hardship? Yeah, it will take a little effort, but just because you have to put a little work into something doesn’t mean it has to be a stress-inducing misery-fest. Sheesh, Elly, just enjoy your daughter’s birthday for goodness sake, and stop defining the quality of every interaction with your children by how much work it means for you.

this day and age,, peanut butter sandwiches are a no-no,, everyone it seems, has an allergy of some sort! so planning a party is no fun anymore,, you get more phone calls of moms, requesting,, so and so,, can’t eat this or you can’t serve that,, not worth it anymore!

It’s true that back then, the parties weren’t the extravagant shows of wealth with rented amusements, bouncy houses and preformers that they have now. That come along in the 90’s to present. I remarked at my nephew’s birthday party this week that our parties, when I was a kid, were more for the adults’ entertainment than for ours. My mother was about to get mad, but my father said I was right. We always had good party food and games though, and celery and peanut butter wasn’t on the list.

I think the idea is that the party isn’t for the kid – it’s just to show off what a great mom she is – forget it! Sounds like nobody is going to have a good time at this party!!
Better idea – take the kid to the park, have Annie bring her kid along, buy some cupcakes (or make them if you still have to prove yourself as a mom), stick a couple of candles in them & sing Happy Birthday. Everybody will have a lot more fun.
I always laugh when I compare my second “wedding” at the JP, Dad, Brother, Sister-in-law, Nephew, & Niece-on-the-way invited, almost forgot the ring, stopped at a local restaurant afterward on a whim – to my first “proper” wedding with the gown, chapel, minister, flowers, cake, tuxedos, and 60 of my “closest” friends & relatives. Guess which one was more fun for all – especially my Dad because he didn’t have to wear that dam tux.

I can see her now in the next 10 strips coming up with 101 ways to serve her family celery…soup, puree, as decorations, filled with peanut butter with little raisin “ants” on the top…and quite possibly after the party she could use the leftover celery to use as garnish in her Cesar drink or Bloody Mary after the kids go home! LOL!
And, they probably are too poor to afford much else. John probably has Student Loans up to whazoo to pay for his dental degree, and he did just buy that super duper stereo system…and let’s not forget Ellie’s splurge after the electric can opener fiasco!!!
I am totally enjoying this comic, and my only regret is I didn’t read and enjoy it sooner. But then, I wasn’t a mom myself and most of it would probably have gone over my head…
