Yeah & if your payment is one day late, when you get your next statement, they bill you for 2 months, even though they have cashed the check & it has been posted.
The part that I targeted on was the long cord hanging from the phone. Kids these days will never know the “joy” of stretching the cord around the corner so you can have some privacy, or saying “hold on. I need to get something in the next room.” LOL!
I’d love to switch to cell phone only and dump the land line, but I live in an area where cell phone reception is not good. The cell phone works (sort of) int he driveway, but not at all in the house. So I’m stuck with AT&T landline or phone service through the cable company. But when the cable goes out, not an infrequent happening, how do I call the cable company to let them know (other than going out side int he dark and rain and hoping the cell phone works)?

A few weeks ago, Elly had no idea how much money was left in her check book, yet she kept writing checks and made John balance the thing, so if he lets her pay the bills knowing how scatterbrained and irresponsible she is, it’s his own fault too.

Mrs Luke, I was reading some older strips from about a year ago, and Elly was congratulating herself on what she had accomplished in a day. One of those things was balancing her checkbook. Either she got stupid very fast or Lynn didn’t remember the older strip when she wrote the arc where John had to balance it for her.

When I moved here 5 years ago, I didn’t need 2 phone bills. Many people criticized me then for dropping the land line, most of those people have since followed my lead and dropped theirs.
We also have the AT&T landline plus cell phones. Originally we needed it to have DSL service … now it is a screening method to keep business calls away as it goes straight to voice mail and we never answer it. Even though we are on the national “do not call” registry, we still get at least 5 to 10 calls a day that never leave a message and only sales calls do that. Especially when it is election season … (so if politicians are in season, why can’t you shoot ‘em?) … I’ve picked up the phone on occasion when it rings and someone wants to give me an opportunity that I don’t want … many times, it is the companies I already do business with to skirt around the rules and I don’t want more credit and I don’t want a new credit card and I don’t want extended insurance … they won’t get the message because their sales are hurting and they are grasping at anyone. Recorded messages from doctors and school still get placed just fine and family/close friends have our cell phone lines. (And, NO, cell phone companies are NOT releasing the cell phone numbers to marketing companies anytime soon - that’s an urban legend.)
I live in a semi-rural area and use cable to talk to my bother and Mom. I do have a phone with a cord, but that rarely gets used. We like to skype, it’s fun. If you have a good camera, it makes it even more fun.

I in a sense still have a land line and a cell phone. However the land line is actually VOIP thru Lingo, and the only reason I have that is the wife needs it for her work (works for JetBlue customer service from home). If it wasn’t for that I would probably cancel and just have the cell.

I have the same feelings when I see grade school and middle school kids with the latest and greatest cell phones. I seemed to make it just fine for 28 years before I got a cell phone when I married my wife (and I’m sure every adult out there my age) so I don’t understand why parents are giving in to their kids so early. Much like texting. I actually have texting turned off on my phone as I would rather talk to a person than carry out a coversation thru back and forth texts. Plus it’s getting annoying to see kids these days writing notes, emails, and papers and without realizing appreviate words with text formatted words.
Meh… I’m not a fan of text-speak but language is an ever-changing entity. Look at the difference in English now compared to the 1500’s… it’s hardly recognizable as the same language. With text-speak… evolution of the language is just going at a much faster rate. At least that’s my theory. :)

No one wants wires or towers anymore - except - take a recent case in Hamilton, Il., Keokuk, Ia was not serving the eastern part of Hamilton very well. For once, people were begging for a tower to be built. (been done) All a matter of who benefits.

Catlady, even where there are monopolies, more and more people are ditching landlines because everyone in the household has a cell phone, anyway.
