Took my son to the new skateboard park in town a few years ago. He’d been there 10 minutes, and we spent the next 4 hrs. in ER after breaking his arm in those 10 minutes.
When I was a kid, kid skates were clamp-ons. One size fits all. They came with a skate key to adjust the length to the kid’s shoe size and tighten the front clamps to the toe of the shoe. Took a bit of skill to use ’em with sneakers.
We would take the rubber pad out of the front wheels – gave it a better turning radius. One saved getting hit by a car because of it. Who cared about the slight increase in noise and vibration.
Broken bones could happen with anything. I’ve never broken a bone, but both my kids have. One was at a birthday party where she was jumping around and landed on her foot wrong, and the other involved Cinderella slippers and the stairs.
Never got hurt doing any of that as a kid. Broke my arm carrying laundry out to the car as an adult, tripped and fell holding onto the basket, maximal fracture of the humorous.
Not everybody is on ebay, and people still read and advertise in news papers. The news paper is not totally dead yet, and I hope not for a long time. I enjoy it. And the want ads are local, I probably know the people, and the condition I would expect the item to be in if I buy. Of course, I live in a small town, so things may be different elsewhere.
A fun, super-cute little video on You Tube (that’s actually an HP Printer and Evian Water commercial) and done to the tune of “Brand New Key” by singer Melanie that I thought you all might enjoy!!!!! :-)

I’ve a feeling those skates are Gordon’s; his mother is making him get rid of them.

One pair of skates, two kids trying them, two kids’ broken arms. Been there been the mom to that.

I’ve got a brand new pair of roller skates, you’ve got a brand new key, I think that we should get together and try them out to see…

Relax, Elly…the kid was probably doing something stupid, something that began with the words “Hey guys, watch this!!!”

I never fell while skating. Now riding my bike, oh yeah. I have some nice scars on my knees from some of those falls!

Kids and injuries run hand-in-hand, but they keep going; parents keep worrying. I think it’s part of the human lifecycle.

I would skate down from the top of a pedestrian overpass at the end of our street – it was like a ski jump! Tempted fate but never broke a thing.

The best place to roller skate: at a rink with wooden floors. That’s where I learned to skate.
