Like someone who wouldn’t embarrass her little son? -——-In real life, I sort of chuckle at people like Ellie. Before the screeching starts, I know some think that this kind of thing is “necessary” sometimes. I’m just not one of them.
Michael, some day you will figure out that the whole world (and especially your mother’s behavior) is not about you. Probably about the time you have your own kids. (Exactly the same lecture I gave my own son – also named Michael – when he told me I had embarrassed him in public.)
Son: Mom tell me you didn’t go to the bank in your swim suit. Mom: I was wearing a zipped cover up and a coat. Son: Did you also go to the grocery store like that? Mom: So, you don’t want to know that I also went to the library? Son was almost 30 and Mom was almost 60. You can never stop embarrassing your children.
argy.bargy2Sometimes fiction is more powerful than fact. Niemöller never said that famous “quote”, but was the US token “good German”. He survived because he was a national hero as a WW-I submarine commander. For the Pentagon, he was also a useful distraction from Dietrich Bonhoffer who didn’t survive the war because he was an active member of the anti-Hitler underground. Interestingly, aside from the “quote”, Niemöller is rarely read today, while Bonhoffer is still studied, particularly his predictively titled, “The Cost of Discipleship”. Still, you make good points, if the details are ignored. The essential points are quite valid.
I think it is important for children to see their parents take a stand for something that is important to them; for parents to teach their children that you need to speak out to be heard.

Most kids I know would be proud….even the ones who were that age back when this was written…or maybe especially them.

The Canadian Way is typified by the AntIgonish Co-op (“AntIgonish for potatoes and fish”) whose motto was “the Lord helps those who help each other.”
