This was a very personal bit of commentary. By the time I had a few books out, I was traveling far too often and working long hours when I was home. Having a studio in the house meant that I was working whenever I could find the time, and often, the time was when my kids needed me to be just a mom and not a working mother.
This hits close to home. I think most of us make choices and get involved in activities that begin to consume more time than we expected or even considered at the beginning. Those activities can easily take on a life of their own, and it can be like getting slapped up the side of the head with a 2X4 when family members show how they are affected. Life happens, but we do need to periodically evaluate the impact of our choices.
He is criticizing her for doing things outside the house yet he never lifts a finger to help out around the house. In essence, he is expecting to do what he wants outside and then when he has had his fill of that to come inside and see his mother waiting for him with a hot meal. You can’t have it both ways, Michael.
For school when I was young I did not have the proper type of English grammar. So for any discussions I am sorry. I also did not have pleasure of book reading during the summer school break my mom never was interested in reading.
For yesterday not knowing what I speak of:1. small church closed in growing small town youth Pastor moved to different church different state, results youth stopped going.2. church I go to had trouble brewing disagreement with Pastor and elders, Pastor resigned. Lead Pastor was hired and changes was made.3. our church as others do help in community in need.
My mom went to work outside the home when I was 10, but I didn’t mind…in fact, I LOVED it. I had all those hours with nobody telling me what to do. Of course, I was not allowed to leave the house or have anybody over, but I was happy to entertain myself. Later on, in high school, I volunteered to cook dinner each night, but that was OK because I love to cook, and besides, that’s how I earned money for my horse-back riding lessons.
A lot of kids are raised by one parent (usually a mother). In our case, it was because our Dad died very young. He did have life insurance, but it would not have lasted very long if that was our only income, so our mother went back to work part time. She also started college to get qualified as a teacher, but ended up not finishing. (Three years after our Dad died, she met and married the great guy who became our step dad.)
Point of all this is that many kids don’t have a parent who is able to spend all day just sitting in the house, doing their laundry, cooking their food and never doing anything else. Too bad the Michael character is so unable to understand that the real world doesn’t necessarily fit his make believe story.

I guess dad comes home and doesn’t do much with the kids — and doesn’t know how to schedule so he can do more.
