Better save that dollar bill, Lizzie. It’s a keepsake and might be worth something some day. This strip is from 1987 which was the year the Canadian one-dollar bill was retired and replaced by a one dollar coin, which became known as the “loonie.” (This was a reference to the species of waterfowl shown swimming in a lake on the “tails” side of the coin; not the image of the Queen on the “heads” side.)
In 1996 the two-dollar bill was retired and replaced by a coin. Despite the image of a polar bear on the reverse side, the new coin was quickly dubbed the “toonie” by the public, much to the annoyance of the bureaucrats at the Mint who were hoping for something grander and more dignified.
While the $1 coin is in circulation in the U.S. it was never popular and did not replace ( As I think it should have ) the paper dollar bill.I live in Ecuador, where we use U.S. currency. While you will occasionally get a dollar bill in your change, the U.S. dollar coin is ubiquitous..
@seeddrill. Canadian 50 dollar bills were red, dollar bills were green. Well, reddish at any rate,I haven’t seen one for a while somI don’t know what colour they are sporting these days.

Go for a toonie, Elly, and see if that’ll make Elizabeth sit still for you to braid her.

Pretty sure it will start all over again, as grandma is eagerly awaiting Phil and Georgia’s marriage to bear children.

The MixerToonie and Doubloon are a lot more dignified than “the Queen on the front with a bear behind”.

Do me next, Grandma! I have a dollar that I will give you, AND I will hold still.

Funny that the colorist made the dollar green. The Canadian dollar bills were red, if memory serves. They haven’t been minted for some time now.

Nope, she even drew the bill with the Queen on the right, not the President in the center.
