This is not the first time John has turned measuring for home improvement into an Elly fat joke and sadly, it won’t be the last.

oh, har-dee-har-har, John (Elly may want to take that tape and tie John AND Greg with it to some chairs or to a tree)

Walking away with his hands in his pocket, naturally.

You better be creating measurements for a new dog house, John, since that’s where you’ll be sleeping for the next several months.

I know it’s supposed to be funny . . . but it isn’t.

When did John become suicidal?

The idiot doesn’t even have a tape measure? How the heck is he gonna do a remodel?

I agree. Depicts what likely was one of a series of similar events in their marriage. Hubby must have been a dork. Apologies to dorks.

John, that was just plain mean.

John will regret saying those words.

Elly should save John the trouble of remodeling the kitchen by not cooking for that jerk.

They’re in Canada. Shouldn’t the tape be in meters?

Elly should turn that around and ask Greg for a tape that measures in millimetres!

Gotta say here, like others have said, I don’t like the rude jokes he makes about her. That is one thing that my wife and I have never done in over 24 years of marriage, is make disparaging comments about each other, not even as a “joke”. It’s just not funny. It’s incredibly rude and disrespectful.

John definitely has a death wish!

Everyone has their limits and I have reached mine with John. I now thoroughly hate him. First he refers to Elly as “the” wife. Men who do this are insensitive boors. You never hear women referring to their husbands as “the” husband. Then he’s implying again that she’s fat. She has a pretty good figure from where I sit. Even if she weighed 600 lbs. her waistline could never be as huge as his fat head!

In marriage, there’s usually some good natured ribbing and teasing that goes on, but it shouldn’t be unilateral.

One partner’s constant teasing or cracking jokes at the other’s expense, borders on spousal abuse.

Although, John’s quip, in the final panel, is funny, it also appears to be retaliatory, for Eli’s honest inquiry about his remodeling project.

Unless going really artistic, kitchen cabinets are not that hard to make. I made ours back in the 70s for one house. However, the cost of birch plywood was a lot less then. Plus, I turned the doors over to a carpentry shop to have the edges shaped – didn’t have a tool for that.

John’s a jerk. I despise the strips when Eli’s the butt of his jokes. It’s never the other way around, either. I guess I’m done with this strip. And I’m not the party-pooper type, either.

If Ellie is fat then John is an Olympic decathlon champion.

This is ’50’s humor. We’d better be long past it.

I think it’s very obvious, reading these all again after so many years, why Lynn and her husband are divorced.
