One of the running jokes in this comic strip is that the Pattersons have terrible table manners and that’s all of the Pattersons including Elly. I fully expect to see a comic strip where we seeing eating accompanied by the sound effects of “CHOMP MUNCH EAT GULP CHEW GLUT MUNCH MFF GLUT SLUPP”
I’ve heard people talk about how sad it is that we treat strangers nicer than we treat our own family. One article suggested that stay-at-home mothers wearing sweatpants and not bothering to get dressed properly were showing disrespect to their family, and that mothers should dress for their family they way they would dress to go out in public.
I can’t begin to express how many levels I disagree with that on. My own loophole would be that I have no shame in being dressed “shabbily” in public, either.
Tad late to be starting Elly – he’s old enough to know better. I know these are comic strips, but so many of them seem to be written in reference to real life, as this one appears to be. Kids even by Lizzy’s age should have table manners 365 days a year, not just holidays or when company comes or you go out. I never understood the “be on your best behaviour” comment some parents make to their kids when they went out or had company or family over, what’s wrong with behaving nicely whether you have company or not
