I never ever want to go back to being a teenager.

You know, in Panel 3 if Elly had said instead “Would you like to feel like a teenager again, John?” I expect he would have given a different answer in Panel 4.

I can’t help but think that I could do a much better job, knowing what I do now, than I did back then.

There will probably be future strips where Elly sighs about getting old, and wishes she was younger.

I’m in my early 20’s now so nope! I’m good. Even years from now I can confidently say I don’t want to be teen again (Unless I’m allowed to have the knowledge I have now when I go back)

I wouldn’t want to be a teenager again, but I wish I could visit my teenage self, and give her some advice. Take business courses, not college prep. I couldn’t afford college, and had no job skills. Two classmates took all the business courses high school had, and got good jobs right after graduation. I worked minimum wage jobs until I was able to take a 6-month business school course, and got a civil service job when I was 24. Made about $2 more than minimum until I started getting promoted.

♫♪And those of us with ravaged faces, Lacking in the social graces, Desperately remained at home, Inventing lovers on the phone, Who called to say “come dance with me”, And murmured vague obscenities, It isn’t all it seems , at seventeen…♪♫(At Seventeen, Janis Ian, 1975)

The first half of my teens were pretty good, but it all went south in a hurry when I discovered drugs, and alcohol at 16.I spent the next 16 years mired in addiction, and really missed out on the so called “best years of our lives”.I was lucky to have crawled out of that, and life has been good since, but I still regret those lost years.I am really impressed with the honesty of the commenters on this site, most people have a tendency to gloss over the tough times they had as teens,or embellish the good ones.

Glory days, well they’ll pass you by, glory days, in the wink of a young girl’s eye….

There was an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer about a mother who used witchcraft to switch bodies with her teenaged daughter to relive her glory days on the cheerleading squad. At the end of the episode, Buffy asks her mom if she would like to be 16 again. Mom says nope, wouldn’t want to go through all that again. Buffy kisses her and says, “I love you Mom.”

Knowing what I know NOW, I wouldn’t mind going back then. Keeping all the pettiness in perspective. Knowing that everything that seemed so important at the time really wasn’t.

Of course, knowing what I know now I would do a LOT of things differently and most certainly end up a different person than I am…. would he be better or worse than me?
