Welcome to the new home, Phil and Georgia and now goodbye to you for 3 years.
Lynn Johnston’s mother, Ursula M. Ridgway, passed away Sept 22, 1989, after a brave and lengthy battle of cancer, at age 70.
In comic strip reprint time, that would translate to September this year.
Then what happened was described very politely by Lynn’s daughter Kate in her 2015 biography The Comic Art of Lynn Johnston:
Lynn’s openness, over the years, about her tenuous relationship with her mother has, at times, caused friction within the family. The people who were close to Ursula adored her.
One of the persons with whom she had friction was Lynn’s brother, the real-life Phil. Their estrangement from each other after the funeral led to Phil and Georgia exiting the comic strip for 3 years. See you later, Phil and Georgia.
