I hate fruitcake. It tastes so awful. Nothing fruity about it at all. Should be called poisoncake for the awful chemical taste.

I think Elizabeth has nailed it. That’s genuinely funny wordplay on “fruitcake” and the setup in the first three panels of Elly yelling makes it very easy to imagine Elly yelling at the scale. Well done. Very funny. One of Lynn Johnston’s best comic strips from this year.

Real nice one, Liz. Your mother is playing the victim card here, like she had absolutely nothing to do with this pregnanacy.

Everyone hates fruitcake, yet, they are still around. In an abundance it would seem. Personally, I like fruitcake. But not the shemical chemical versions.

We never eat fruit cake because it has rum

And one little taste turns a man to a bum

Oh, can you imagine a sorrier sight

Than a man eating fruit cake until he gets tight

One thing about fruitcake in my family is that no one ever eats it. They just give it as a present to whosoever didn’t have it last. That fruitcake is probably older than most of the people in my family!

My mom made a no-bake fruitcake one year. I’m not sure what the base was, but it had the citron and candied fruit. Every day for a months she would pour a shot glass of brandy (possibly rum, I don’t really remember) over it and it sat on top of the refrigerator fermenting. I don’t like citron, so I never ate any, but the family seemed to like it.

I love fruitcake, too. My Godmother made one for me. She passed away before I got her recipe. The Swiss Colony makes an excellent one.

This another one of the word play punch lines that might not have translated well into other languages, (Lynn told us that in the past, as the strip was printed all over the world), but it is hilarious in English!

I love fruitcake. It gets a bad rap. The tastes depends on who makes it. I also love plum pudding.

I make a lovely fruitcake using my grandmother’s recipe. It takes weeks to make, so I only do it every few years and then store it in the freezer and serve it at Christmas in very small portions. It is incredibly rich, moist, and yummy. However, I do understand why many other fruitcakes are hated, it can be so dry and many are even stale. Makes sense to dislike something unpleasant, but don’t paint all fruitcake with the same brush. There are a few that are good. :P

No wonder I never got good grades in school, after Christmas! We gave our teachers fruitcakes as Christmas presents (these were commercially made, and came in decorative tins. The fruitcakes… not the teachers!)!
