In Canada, the green bills are the $20 bills. Fortunately for Elly, she may live in Canada, but she banks using one of those US bank ATM machines.
Doing the math, Elizabeth has an allowance of 4 dollars. Mike, on the other hand, just got paid his allowance and he can’t afford to pay for a movie which was 4 dollars back in 1991 when this comic strip was originally published. The implication is that Elizabeth gets a bigger allowance than Michael.
I would love an ATM that made a “BLAPP BLAPPP BLAPPP” sound. The ATM I go to has really loud beeping noises.
Now that we can deposit checks into our accounts with an app, I’m waiting for an app that takes money out and sends it to our laser printer. If Stamps.com can print stamps, why not?
Funny how Mom seems to forget that the very first functional word almost all of us learned was, “No.” I see at least three of those demands she could have ignored with a cheerful smile.
Allowances in our house were quiet different. We gave our kids $10 a week totally based on their assigned chores and cleanliness of their room. If their room was dirty at the end of the week, my wife got a $4 cleaning fee. If the 3 assigned chores weren’t done, minus $2 per chore. And the big clincher was – if we got a note or call from the teacher that homework was’t turned in, you lost all of next weeks $10 and still had to do the choirs. I only remember taking money only a few times. One of our kids was in the hole for about month and then figured out her new attitude wasn’t working.

if this is set in Canada, shouldn’t the banknotes be rainbow coloured per denomination?

hmmmm. I always thought you got an allowance because you did regular chores, or things around the house when asked .

When I was their age, I got an allowance. As long as I did my chores, worked in school, and kept the place clean, I was allowed to live there.

When you’re a kid and don’t have a revenue source of your own, your only option is Mom mining. It is challenging but rewarding work.

$5 for vacuuming the car? In 1991 dollars? WOW

You need lots of dough to pull your daily cart, no doubt. The persistant call for school activities could be the last straw.

I think the most disappointing part of the comic strip is we don’t get to see the conversation Elly was having with the ATM.
