The rule I was taught is that “earth” should only be capitalized in an astronomical context — for instance, a list of planets. Even for me, though, that is a very iffy rule that I am willing to break. I usually break the rule about the final punctuation mark being sucked inside quotation marks, because that makes no sense whatsoever.
