Watergate was nearly 50 years ago, and most young people today probably have no idea what it was. Yet, still today, every major scandal (and many minor ones) gets a name ending in -gate, and a large part of the population has no idea why.
Couldn’t’ve been Bill Watterson. Calvin & Hobbes was so popular that he was able to negotiate two sabbaticals, and papers weren’t allowed to rearrange the format.
Since he’s been rerunning strips for fifteen years his topics are this dated all the time. It’s amusing to think that we’re in for a week of trying to make characters who were riffing on The Blair Witch Project last week come across as being behind the times.

Reminds me of last year when everyone was wondering why covid didn’t show up immediately in comics. Rather then three, four or six months later.

So did this actually happen to Amend?

Was Amend having problems with his syndicate back in 1999? Or was this a friend of his?

Could have been this strip. The syndicate was only trying to get him to amend his ways.
