If I recall, my library offers two-week loans. So once I tried reading The Brothers Karamazov, but that didn’t give me much time as I’m kind of a slow reader.

I’m so glad they didn’t have summer reading when i was in school. I’m not that big of a reader.

I never had a summer reading list myself. If you saw my check out history you might think other wise.

This was my mother; she was an avid reader. She tried to get me into reading like she was, it never worked.

I read 17 books in two weeks one time while visiting my grandmother. Okay, they were Reader’s Digest condensed versions, but still…

Never went to a school system that had or encouraged a ‘Summer Reading List,’ but that did not stop MY reading. I just did not read the ‘thought provoking’ books of classic literature. I am getting around to try and knock some of thjose off now, but I still ‘backslide’ to the kind of books I enjoy.

The “summer reading list” is one of those comic strip tropes that doesn’t seem to have been at all common in real life.

Amazing what you can accomplish if you don’t have to spend 10 hours a day at a job …

When I was a kid, our family took one banana box each for our books. Most libraries gave up arguing with my family about the limit. We generally finished the whole box within our time. One place loaned the books for three weeks. We still went every two weeks.

So, yes, we were all fast readers – except my Mom. She was a speed reader, turning the page every 3-5 seconds, and knew the material better than we did for the same book!

When I was a kid, we had bookworms on the classroom wall that were made of paper rings, each ring representing a book we had read. Mine was the longest. I’ve always loved to read.

I love how people who read like that claim not to read faster than narrative speed.
