Some people in our local Muslim community observe Lent to show their solidarity with us Christians. My response was, “Don’t you guys get enough of that in Ramadan?”
I’ve seen the requirements for Ramadan. Lent is easier.
Then there’s the other Orthodox, the Jews. On Yom Kippur, you don’t eat, drink or smoke from a half hour before sundown until an hour after sundown the next day.
You walk to and from synagogue (usually early hot Fall), and the services last the entire day, with maybe an hour break in the afternoon.
There’s another day with similar prohibitions, except you can drive and work, and numerous sunrise to an hour after sundown day fasts.

I’m grateful for the politicians and the overly religious; all the hot air they generate keeps the atmosphere from crushing us…

Wish I could remember where I recently read or heard a great line about packing so many words into so little meaning.
