There are two reasons companies lay off people: (1) they are incompetent and cannot do the job, (2) they are exceptionally competent and have solved the problem they were hired to solve and are no longer needed.
The latter category either gets promoted to a position beyond their capabilities (Peter Principle) or gets pay raises within their position to the point where the bean counters say, ’We are paying this guy too much for his job description. We can replace him with two college graduates."
