I saw a guy sitting in a recliner,food on the floor drink in one hand remote in another sitting way to close to a tv and not bothering to get up and answer the door. So what was I supposed to think?

He’s already living the American Dream. He’s just being cautious. Why risk losing it? Every opportunity has risks & benefits. Greed and wanting more than you need might not be something he’s comfortable with. The definition of success varies from person to person.
it’s all in what you read into it. some might call it suspicion rather than fear. “if it’s to good to be true, it’s probably not true” is an axiom for a very good reason. (and how many of us are bombarded with “opportunities” at every turn? Spam comes to mind.
