I believe it was Erma Bombeck who wrote a column about a coach who played to lose. He gathered all the last picks, and the team played just to have a good time. Then one year he got a kid who was an absolute phenomenon, and they won a game in spite of themselves. The coach promptly quit. “I couldn’t take the pressure.”
