Caulfield: Oops! I totally missed cinco de mayo! I feel so un-multi-cultural. Mr. Spaetzle: You didn't miss a special day. You're an every-day-is-special kind of guy! Frazz: What's new? Caulfield: Not much, but I think Mr. Spaetzle forgot his wife's birthday again.
Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s independence day. It is nothing with other hispanic cultures, either. It celebrates one battle during the Mexican Revolution, and they didn’t win that one.
It is celebrated in the US more than in Mexico itself (the 16th of September is the July 4 of Mexico).
I have never figured out what the big deal is here in the States. I have spent over ten years of my life in Latin America, am fluent in Spanish, and have studied and am familiar with the culture of several Hispanic cultures. The only country that gives a rip about 5 de Mayo is the United States.
But then again, I have lots of African-American friends, and still haven’t met one that celebrates Kwanzaa, though all of them celebrate Christmas.
