I wonder why there was not the usual advertising glut about Cinco de Mayo…I guess they figured nobody needed another reason to drink.

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s independence day. It is nothing with other hispanic cultures, either. It celebrates one battle during the Mexican Revolution, and they didn’t win that one.

It is celebrated in the US more than in Mexico itself (the 16th of September is the July 4 of Mexico).

I have never figured out what the big deal is here in the States. I have spent over ten years of my life in Latin America, am fluent in Spanish, and have studied and am familiar with the culture of several Hispanic cultures. The only country that gives a rip about 5 de Mayo is the United States.

But then again, I have lots of African-American friends, and still haven’t met one that celebrates Kwanzaa, though all of them celebrate Christmas.

I work in a school in a largely Hispanic part of town. The PTA uses “Cinco de Mayo” as a theme for the end of the year fiesta/fundraiser. The date is right, and they get a lot of community buy-in from the Mexican cultural aspects.

(This year “Cinco de Mayo” was on May 1, since it was a Friday.)

I no longer have a whiskey quota, sigh. Certain medications make it impossible to imbibe, no matter how good the single malt.

Crackers! I haven’t been able to celebrate May 5 in ages. Though celebrate usually means salsa and/or nachos and margaritas: 1 can of frozen limeade, 1 limeade can of tequila, and triplesec to taste.

Tequila or Cerveza. If you’re going to use a disparaging stereotype at least put some thought into it.

Kwanzaa was created out of nothing by a Berkeley professor, so it’s a ‘forced’ celebration not originating from any actual African culture or religion.

Caufield needs to stop overthinking things, and finding ulterior messages in everything adults say. Sometimes, little dude, people just say what they mean, and what Mr. S said was lovely and worth remembering on bad days.

As a person with a History degree who likes Mexican food I make a nice Mexican meal and laugh at everyone making a big deal of something that I think is acknowledged in the city that it took place in. Their brief moment of glory in a losing war.

I’ve just decided: This comic strip would be pretty okay, if it were only about this Caulfield kid. “Frazz Minus Frazz”? Ooooh, this is ripe with possibilities! Ripe, I tell ya!!!
