Might be e-motion sickness. Cameras in balloons. Cameras in drones. Cameras in traffic lights. Cameras in….We have truly become a surveillance society. No matter what we do, there is always an eye watching us.

Actually, they’ve been putting cameras on weather balloons for a while now. You just have to have it be able to survive the fall once the balloon pops and you need a way to find it once it lands.

Take a 2′×2′ sheet of cardboard, and punch 1/8" holes near the corners. Mount a smartphone or a small GoPro from the bottom in the middle. Take 4 balloon and pull the necks through the holes. Blow up the balloons and pinch off the mouths with clothespins until you’re ready to start. Remove the clothes pins all at the same time. Keep repeating until you find a hole size that maximizes height with air time.

We took the Cub Scouts out for a rocket launch. One of the dads taped a keychain-sized video camera to the fuselage. The rocket broke in half when the parachute was deployed and part of the rocket came plummeting down and stuck in the mud. The resulting video could NOT have been more perfect. The countdown. The the crowd of boys grew smaller as the rocket ascended. Then there was confusion. Then peaceful blue sky and swamp reeds. Then the nosecone and parachute drifted lazily across the scene. Aaaaand CUT!

The coloring and shading on that balloon trail is very impressive. Getting it to be clear enough without looking too obvious must have taken a lot of work.

Not only that, but this camera would have to be light enough not to interfere with the wacky trajectory of a balloon flying around as it releases air.
