It is not Halloween/Thanksgiving/ Christmas season, it is Sugar Overload or Hyper Season. No wonder we are an obese society.

I don’t have to outrun the bear; I only have to outrun you.

If you’re ever feeling down for no reason, or any reason, keep this in reserve: “Bears,” written by Steven Fromholz and performed by Lyle Lovett on his exquisite 1998 album “Step Inside This House.” I don’t care what kind of music you do or don’t like, if this arrangement of this song doesn’t pick you up, you’re on your own.

When “Step Inside This House” came out, I was baffled. Lovett is such a brilliant songwriter. Why would he put out a double album of other people’s stuff? I bought it anyway. There for a while I was buying anything Lyle put out there. If he’d set his grocery list to music, it would be on my shopping list. So once again I discovered the obvious, in this case if you can create something great, you can probably be trusted to recognize what’s great. And the album I bought without knowing quite for sure why is — some days, at least — my favorite Lyle Lovett album. Which is saying something.
