I was having serious difficulty in a university math class, having taken a test while considerably under the weather (and it not being a class I was doing well in anyway)… and I told the prof that I had to know it was POSSIBLE for me to get at least a B, else I had to drop before the deadline. He promised me that if I was willing to do some extra credit work, he would guarantee it. I then got a low grade on the NEXT midterm. But he made good on his promise and handed twenty questions to the class, explaining that they were pure extra credit. I put my heart and soul into it and managed to finish 14 of the 20, (one of them, only by assuming a prior one was proven, which I could not do). He gave me an ‘A’… and told me that the work of making and then grading the test was enough to make him swear off giving extra credit forever after.
I’m pretty sure that it was enough to make me swear off taking them, too.
