The idea of a back up planet is a dream. The nearest one
they have found that might be habitable is 15+ light years away. It would take 13,117,500 years to travel that distance at the speed of sound, assuming that the ship can be maintained for that length of time. And, we might be able to build ships that will enable a small number of humans who are descended from the original occupants to reach that planet millions of years in the future. Whereupon, if it’s an inhabitable planet, there is a good chance that the inhabitants will blow them out of their sky. Or perhaps we will invent warp speed. Granted, it’s science fiction, but so were computers 50 years ago. But, here’s a novel idea. How about we just use about one tenth of the scientific knowledge and human ingenuity that all that getting to a back up planet would require to keep from destroying the planet that we already have.
