Three years ago, at the age of 58, I went for a physical for a new job. And for the first time in my life, the doctor who was doing the exam used that hammer. When she took it out, I asked her what exactly it was testing. I explained that my only experience with that particular medical device was via sitcoms and cartoons, where the patient’s reflexes typically result in the doctor being kicked across the room. She was amused and happy to explain what it was for. I don’t remember the technical details now, but there’s always google.
