Definitely a learned skill. You can try to segue the conversation into something else…something you enjoy talking about. But it takes a lot of effort to simply PRETEND to be engaged. Maybe they need to have a secret signal where he can indicate to her that he’s ready to go home. That’s what we do.

It is way to easy to nod at the wrong time when you are pretending to listen. That can buy you a peck of trouble.

Get his hearing checked. People with hearing loss often tune out since it’s so hard to understand especially in groups.
