Witches, contrary to popular opinion, were most often executed by hanging but their bodies were burned after execution because the good Christians didn’t believe that their deity was smart or powerful enough to resurrect a pile of ashes instead of a bag of bones. The Catholics retained their prohibition on cremation until the 1960s, but still disallow it under certain circumstances.
