In the original novel (1897), vampires aren’t hurt by sunlight. They’re weakened and lose their powers between sunrise and sunset, but sunlight itself won’t destroy them. The idea that sunlight will destroy vampires seems to come from Nosferatu (1922), but it’s since become accepted into our folklore.
