The strip pledges to deal with contemporary issues, and this is a big ol’ can of cat food that’s been opened up! As a teacher, I too am tired of the bashing and disrespect generated by the largely uniformed public.. We pay for our pensions, just like the average Joe Businessman. The difference? The goverment regulates Social Security to make sure the employers contribute, and fine them if it is not paid. The government collects our pension money, but if it is not paid, then we get blamed for being greedy. If pension payments were not paid on Social Security, there would be huge fines! But if the government doesn’t make the TRS payments, who can say anything? Lastly, all this is going to do is to send good people who went into education to help others and not be rich, go elsewhere for a career and then we will have a huge teacher shortage, people in front of the classroom that are in it for the temporary job position only, and test scores that go backwards in a hurry. Like other professions, we should be able to weed out those that don’t belong. Like other professions, we have some that are not true professionals. But unlike other professions, we make a difference in peoples lives every single day and we are the future. Because all those people who are criticizing us today are where they are because of a teacher they had along the way. I would like to see salesmen or dentists evaluated by the performance of their clients or patients. That makes as much sense as evaluating teachers based on student performance. That will turn us into the sports world where they fire the manager but keep the players who don’t improve and don’t have the fundamentals to be in the game. Go Milford!
