At an average speed of 65 mph, it would have traveled 942 miles. That would take it to Davenport, IA, 941 miles; 14 hrs.36 minutes. It would be CST, and 9:30pm. Funny, I could never solve these problems when I was in elementary school.

Very good.. my kind of math.. fly…but that takes just about 14.5 hours now also… get there early..and traffic to get out when you arrive…

I’ll take the train. LOVE trains. Get to see the country better.I’m in no hurry to get from point A to B. Wouldn’t travel such a long distance unless it’s for vacation.

All the comments here seem to go to back up Michael’s point – fly! I think he should get at least 1/2 credit for creativity. Full credit if he answered the question – nonstop NYC to LAX is about 5h 40m. Accounting for time zones the time should be 10:40. However, you should probably figure getting in around 11:00 due to delays taking off, landing, etc.

But you’d lose time by sitting on the runway for endless hours.

I figured it would be 7:30 pm after taking into consideration the time zone in California. But then – I don’t know the train speed, travel route, etc, etc. .Now if the problem stated ‘as the crow flies’ – then maybe. And yeah …. how come these type of questions are easier now then they were in school?

The question is not where the train is. It’s what time is it.And no matter how you look at it it’s still Monday.

If it’s a passenger train, you must also consider delays from yielding to freight trains. It used to be the passenger trains had right of way. These days, it’s freight.

Trick question. Trains are immaterial. What time is it? Just look at a clock!
