In my town, they will NOT pick up Christmas trees with the garbage. You have to take them to one of many collection areas where they will be ground up and used for mulch. Much better way to dispose of those trees.
My dad used to buy a live tree and planted it in the yard every year. Made good wind cover.. He would have a hole dug ahead so he could plant it after Christmas.

We have “yard waste” pickup every week, so no problem with the xmas trees.

One use for the trees is to shore up earthen berms. Another is as mulch. Better than just putting on a rubbish dump.
